Rosa Herzberg Biography
Born 28th of April 1982 in the countryside of the north of the Netherlands. Rosa never really felt
at home there so when she was 18 and had the opportunity to move to London she did. In London she met
this Portuguese community that welcomed her as one of their own. She started studying performance art but
soon realized she was more in place with the visual Arts.
Rosa loves working with her hands Actually, she is quite old-fashioned, Of course it can be done more easily,
cheaper and faster on the computer. But she feels that way the work loses some of its personality and
tangibility.
In 2008 Rosa graduated in Fine Arts at the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD). During these
studies nostalgia was a recurring theme. ¨I have a hard time letting go of good and beautiful things that
cease to exist.¨
After finishing her degree Rosa traveled a lot, collecting materials and beads and made these into jewelery.
She used to carve pendants and amulets out of avocado seeds. Carving these is similar to cutting linoleum
because it also is a delicate and soft material. When she was pregnant of her daughter in 2012, she went
back to the Netherlands this time in Amsterdam.
Rosa then became an apprentice to Eddy Varekamp who thought her all about printmaking techniques
(specialy linocut and letterpress) and with whom she collaborated with for 8 years. During the pandemic it
became clear she did not want to stay in Amsterdam anymore so she moved to Alentejo with her daughter
who now goes to school in Luzianes.
They have started a new life there but brought Rosa’s old press with her, so
she can continue her printmaking practice, and thus culturally enrich the village of Luzianes.
